Chapter 8

No lie, the Cynthia Woods Pavilion and the Woodland’s mall complex were beautiful around Christmas time. It was a stretch of area between a high-end mall and events venue. The area was so huge that a free trolley literally ran every thirty minutes, taking people from one end to the other. A man-made river streamed throughout the entire area, and boats were out, doing their thing. There were multiple restaurants and sources of entertainment throughout the complex. There were lights everywhere, as families had come out to take the scenery in. Even though the sun hadn’t quite gone down, everything felt magical.

I mean…maybe it was the lights, or the fact that I felt complete again. For the past few months, I’d been going through it, but that day…it felt like the rain was finally over.

Pushing my baby in her stroller, I watched Zyeer and the boys ride their electrical scooters down the sidewalk, although there were clear signs, prohibiting the activity. My babies hadn’t stopped laughing yet, making me want to live in this moment forever.

I was filled with pure joy, until I laid eyes on Roland. Apparently, he’d noticed me first, and was already making his way over to me.

“Hey,” he spoke, as he stepped in front of me. “What you doing out here?”

“Umm.” My eyes roamed around, trying to pinpoint Zyeer. Him and the boys had apparently hit a corner on my ass, disappearing from my sight. So, I refocused on Roland. “Just out here, looking at the lights. Like everybody else. Why? What’s up?”

He frowned. “What’s up? Really, Yummi?”

I bucked my eyes. “What? What’s the problem?”

“I’m saying. You aint gon talk about what happened yesterday?”

I narrowed my eyes. “What happened?”

“Come on, man. Don’t play crazy now. That whole thing with your mama. The way she was coming at me. That shit…that shit really bothered me.”

I frowned. “And why is that?”

“Cause. What man wants somebody thinking the worst of them?”

“I don’t know.” I shrugged.

He shook his head. “I aint finna keep sticking my neck out for you, girl. Real fucking talk. I mean…it was one thing when people thought that lil’ Peewee was mine. We’d just broken up a few months prior. So, I get it. But the other two? We hadn’t fucked at all when you popped up pregnant with Boo. I wasn’t in the city like that, so I laughed when people kept saying that I was his daddy. And when you asked me not to say nothing, I let you make it. I guess…cause a part of me kinda preferred people thinking that the kids were mine, versus it being public knowledge that my bitch had gotten pregnant while we were on a break. It’s fucked up, but it is what it is. But that was all a while ago. My life is different now, and it wasn’t like I had to deal with the consequences of the lies we’d told on a regular. Then you have this last baby, and I was blown away when the rumor about her being mine floated back to me.
